The Bogs
We calculated that two toilets would be enough for the participants at
NoWhere. There were a number of ideas, from hiring portaloos (expensive and grim) to buying camping style toilet tents. In the end we decided to do it ourselves. Since there were less than fifty people we thought a bit of fertilisation of the land wouldn't be such a bad thing and reasoned that a hole in the ground approach would suffice. Two holes in the ground to be exact. but what if the holes got full? Easy, we dig another hole and fill the old one up. So the toilet cublicle had to be portable. It worked but
Michelle pointed out that adding straw before re-filling the holes would aid bio-degradation. So I guess that's what we do next time. An old oil drum served as a
BurnBin for non-human waste such as toilet paper. A little earth was thrown down the hole after each use which kept the flies and the smell down.
Since we were such a small group it also seemed reasonable to expect some degree of luxury: toilet roll holders, footpads, handwipes, exotic lighting, groovy wallpaper.... Well, we managed SOME of those things!
This year will probably be the last time we will be able to have really nice toilets. They need to be built and decorated. VOLUNTEERS?
N.B. This project does NOT require you to deal with any form of sewerage in any way!
The actual toilets had a lid over the hole.
AND... we managed to incorporate a rather pleasant view...
