A nice stopover on the way from SanFrancisco to Reno is DonnerLake And the best way to approach it is via the Donner Pass Road which leaves route 80 at the Soda Springs junction. The view of the valley as you cross the Donner Pass is spectacular. You can also get to the lake by staying on route 80 till you see the signs just before Truckee. The lake is very close to route 80 so it's easy to simply stop by for a quick look. There's a camp site at the east end of the lake but, so far, it's still possible to just stop in a car park and sleep in your vehicle. If you do this please be considerate and discreet so as not to spoil it for the future.
