Donner lake is a nice stopping off point from
Interstate80. But the best way to approach it is via the
Donner Pass Road which leaves Interstate80 at the Soda Springs junction.∞ (Just before Lake van norden). The view of the valley as you cross the Donner Pass is spectacular. You can also get to the lake by staying on
Interstate80 till you see the signs just before Truckee. The lake is very close to the highway so it's easy to simply stop by for a quick look. There's a camp site at the east end of the lake but, up tp now, it's still possible to just stop in a car park and sleep in your vehicle. If you do this please be considerate and discreet so as not to spoil it for the future. The water is pretty bracing in August!

Donner Party∞ who spent their fateful winter near its vicinity in 1846.
