Bikes are considered almost essential to get around
BlackRockCity. Sometimes they can be rented before the event. Afterwards they can be donated to young people (who repair and resell them) in one of the small towns near the festival.
As bikes on the playa take quite a battering its a good idea to have some way to repair them.
A cheap lock isn't a bad idea - it just stops someone from borrowing/misidentifying your bike!

Tips

- Make sure the tires are not old and crumbly. If they are, put on new tires before you come to the playa.
- Make sure you have at least one inner tube with you that fits your bike - thay are available at Target, KMart, Wal-Mart, REI, your local bike shop, many large drug stores.
- Try to not buy any old used bike unless you are with someone who knows something about bikes.
- Try to bring a single-gear there's less to go wrong - trust me
- Bring lights!

- When you mount your bikes on your trunk, make sure that the exhaust pipe isn't pointing at any of the tires - hot exhaust is well known for melting bike tires. If you
- Make sure your camp has a pump.
- Bring a can of spray oil for your chain, and keep spraying it on every day - a nice light application followed by a thorough wiping off, before you start riding. Too much oil on your chain looks like glue to passing playa dust - not so good.
